Our waterfront is equally impressive, with a natural shoreline and sand beach waterfront that extends over 1,800 feet. Port Cunnington Lodge & Resort is a short drive from Algonquin Park, the oldest and one of the most popular provincial parks in Canada. Designated a National Historic Site of Canada, Algonquin Provincial Park is 7,653 square kilometres of pristine wilderness, with abundant wildlife, hundreds of lakes and rivers, and trails of all descriptions. An ideal daytrip destination from our Lake of Bays Resort, while there, be sure to visit the Algonquin Park Visitors Centre and Logging Museum. Who knows, you might even see a moose or a bear at the side of the road.
Our Lake of Bays resort is just a twenty-minute drive from the pretty little town of Dorset, and the trip from Port Cunnington Lodge to Dorset by motorboat is even faster. Dorset is situated on the border between Muskoka and Haliburton County, on Trading Bay along the eastern shore of Lake of Bays. Dorset has a number of restaurants, shops, and galleries. It is home to the famous Robinson's General Store, which was voted " the best country store in Canada". The store has an amazing variety of merchandise, ranging from high-end clothing, giftware, hardware, and groceries. Robinson's General Store has been a cottage country tourist attraction for decades.
During the summer months, Dorset is a busy place with tourists and cottagers, who arrive by boat or by car to shop, have lunch, or to just spend a few hours exploring. While you are in town, you will want to visit the Bigwin Steamship Restoration Project display, the Lake of Bays Marine Museum, and the famous Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower. If you are lucky, you might even see the occasional black bear or two walking the main street of town.
The Dorset Scenic Tower stands 82 feet high from its mountain-top location. Originally constructed as a fire tower, it offers an unbelievable view of more than 310 square miles, overlooking Lake of Bays, North Muskoka, and Haliburton. Beware, there is no elevator to the top; just stairs. So, only those physically fit and not prone to vertigo should attempt the climb. For those you are less physically inclined or don't like heights, there is an information centre, gift shop, picnic area, and a well-maintained trail system for hiking.
